2013 Class Descriptions

I Love Cheesecake w/ Gwen Martin
Years ago my husband took me out to an Italian restaurant for my birthday.  I was given a complimentary slice a of cheesecake and I was grateful it was free because I couldn't believe the regular price!  I decided to go home and see if I could replicate that cheesecake.  I researched recipes and techniques, took bits of pieces from each and made my first cheesecake.  It was amazing!  That made me curious about what else I could cook and so began my hobby and interest in the culinary world.  Since then I've become what friends and family consider "a good cook" and I've found so much joy in baking my way into the hearts of those I love.
Discover that you can craft a creamy cheesecake with the help of a few tested, tried and true tips and techniques.  We'll discuss everything from individual ingredients to pan size, troubleshooting to toppings. And of course we'll whet our palates with some tasty bites of cheesecake.

Bread & Beyond w/ Brenda Clark
I love to cook and bake, and making bread has become a passion of mine. I was determined to learn to make bread and rolls as a newly wed and have many different recipes that I enjoy using. I gathered tips from from family, neighbors and friends. I have collected a lot of fun recipes over the years. For the last ten years, I have been a Taste of Home field editor and have learned a lot. I'm definitely not a professional but I do have a lot of fun baking for family and friends.
My class will consist of how many different things you can make with one batch of dough and also some fun recipes and samples.

Tasty Tortillas & Salsa w/ Katherine Allen
I love chips & salsa!  I also love variety!  I have a big family of 8 & thought it would be a great idea to learn how to make our own salsa out of the things we are growing in the garden!  Salsa can be made in so many ways so for this class we will be able to sample a good variety of salsas (including a zucchini salsa) & tortillas and learn together how to make them perfect!!

Fantastic Frozen Meals w/ Kim Braswell & Suzette Woodland
I am a busy mom with 3 children ages 17-6.  I learned a long time ago, that I have to be organized and try to plan my meals ahead of time in order to keep my hungry family well fed.  I have come to depend on preparing freezer meals that I can pull out, defrost and pop in the oven, to feed my family a healthy homemade dinner.  I am just a simple mom that likes to bake and cook from scratch for my friends and family.  I, along with my friend Suzette Woodland would like to share how to prepare 5 meals to freeze and use in the future.

Ooh Baby! Homemade Gifts for Little Ones  w/ Melanie Malm
Every cutieface deserves a little something made from the heart!  Come learn about handmade boutique-style projects that you can finish in a day.

150 Year Sesquicentennial: Pioneer Quilts w/ Susan Nelsen
Listen to fascinating stories about the adventure-some Oregon Trail quilters and their quilts as they made their way West. Learn quilt stories about the Mormon pioneers of the Salt Lake Valley. See and enjoy replicas of these antique quilts, made on a smaller scale but with the same number of pieces and similar colors to the original quilts.

One Block Wonder & Stack & Whack w/ Bev Hindman
Beverly has been quilting and teaching for a number of years, starting with the Community Arts and Crafts program in Idaho Falls in the early 70s, Community Education program thru School District 91, Quilting in the Tetons since its inception, quilt shops in Idaho Falls and quilt guilds in Wyoming, Montana, Utah and Idaho. She was a part owner of the Quilted Daisy quilt shop and in charge of its Quilting Education program along with being its’ head teacher. She has won a number of national and local awards for her quilts.

Zucchini Frenzy! w/ Nancy Weber
Ever since I was a small child I loved baking with my mom. She installed in me a love for cooking and baking. She liked to try new recipes and so do I!   With great pleasure I extend an invitation to you... Come bake with me and learn to make the best zucchini breads ever. I will demonstrate my award winning Blueberry lemon Poppy, Cinnamon Banana, and To Live for Double Chocolate zucchini breads as well as give tips for other add ins. I look forward to baking with you!

Yummy!  Appetizers & Party Food w/ Lois Nelson
I think I was born with a love of cooking. At 12 years old I made a log cake – a sponge cake rolled to look like a log.  I didn’t know what confectioners sugar was so I made the frosting with granulated sugar.  It turned out to be a REAL log cake.  I’ve learned a lot throughout my almost 50 years since then and I’m planning a party!

As you arrive in the class, you can grab some samples of three things we’ll learn about.  Some punch, some chili con queso, and some fruit dip.  While you munch…I will take a tube of crescent rolls, put on a scoop of a yummy taco filling, and bake them.  While they bake I’ll show you a few quick and easy party foods. I hope you will come and enjoy an hour of fun, relaxation, snacks, and to feel like you have been to a real party (where you didn’t have to do any work!).

Sugar Cookie Frenzy w/ Salley Johnson of Salley's Cake Shop
The motto of my business is "Your Desire is my Obsession." I love this and live by it every day in everything that I do with my life.  I love to help people and sharing my obsessions is just one of the perks that I get to do with this class. I have loved looking at Pintrest and have enjoyed using many of their ideas, and tweaking them to make them my own.  I hope that with this class I can teach you how to make the best sugar cookies and how to easily decorate them.  I hope that we will have a lot of fun learning new techniques and ideas when it comes to everything SUGAR COOKIES!!

Suga-Frass Gumpaste Flowers w/ Teya Peck and Teya's Finishing Touch
We're making hard sugar into beautiful flowers that look real yet edible.

Party Time!  Birthday & Theme Cakes w/ Katherine Allen & Salley Johnson
As sisters, we have found the love of parties & cake!  We make & create all different  kinds of yummy cakes, to go along with any kind of theme you can imagine!  Salley has perfected the art of baking the most moist & perfect flavor of cakes!  Katherine loves to plan & prepare for parties! So together, what could go wrong?!  For this class, we will be sharing some ways to make simple shapes become creative cakes!  you will be able to sample cupcakes & help decorate a cake in 10 minutes!!!

Play with Food-- w/ Linda Merritt
As a retired school teacher, I have a few ideas to help make learning fun while using food you would find in your kitchen.  Come and join the fun and educational ways to learning.  Children are encouraged to come and participate.  Handouts will be available with other ideas that will not be presented.

Everything to Do with Cinnamon Rolls!  w/ Elizabeth Burton & Emmy Bloom
Elizabeth and Emmy have been cooking from scratch for many years. They now cook at the assisted living center, The Homestead, in St. Anthony. Here they share their love for homemade food. Cinnamon rolls is one of the popular requests they receive. They will share the recipe and what kind of flour to use to make soft and yummy cinnamon, pecan and orange rolls.
